The terms that really matter for meaningful appreciation

The glossary explains the terms used in recognition, remuneration, benefits and Swiss payroll practice. Each entry shows not only what a term means, but also which decision it makes easier in everyday HR work and how it concretely relates to Bontique. Click a term to open the explanation.

A

Additional benefits for employees are offers from the employer alongside the base salary: above-mandatory insurance contributions, mobility, meals, further training, health offers, discounts. Their effect depends on whether they match the needs of the workforce and are communicated understandably; contractually promised benefits are soon taken for granted – only what is voluntary counts towards the relationship account. In Switzerland, each additional benefit must be assessed individually as to whether it is subject to AHV and must be declared in the salary certificate; some are exempt up to fixed limits, for example gifts in kind up to CHF 600.– per person and calendar year.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Complement base salary and should match the workforce’s needs. HR clarifies entitlement, communication, uptake and Swiss contributions for each benefit.
Bontique can complement the benefits offering with flexible gift and recognition moments. Through the choice of partner, the same Check meets different needs, while HR checks the Swiss treatment for each occasion.

The anniversary of joining is the annually recurring day on which an employment relationship began: a small, personal occasion that shows the time spent together is seen. It differs from the work anniversary, which is celebrated only at round milestones and deserves a bigger setting. Companies decide consciously whether they honour every anniversary or only selected milestones, and then stick to it.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Denotes the joining day that recurs annually, not necessarily a special work anniversary. Companies decide deliberately whether to honour every year or only selected tiers.
Bontique can provide automatable joining-anniversary Checks each year, with a personal message. For larger work anniversaries, separate value tiers and designs can be defined.
Gifts & occasions

Appreciation of employees is the fundamental attitude of taking people and their contributions seriously, regardless of the individual result, and showing them this credibly. It comprises communication, fair conditions, leadership and fitting gestures; recognition is its visible individual act, appreciation the attitude behind it. It is the strongest known reason why people want to stay, and it cannot be bought, only shown.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Relates to the person and their contribution, not only to a result. For HR it links attitude, fair conditions, communication and fitting gestures.
Bontique makes appreciation visible as a personal moment: the company shapes message and presentation, the recipient chooses the redemption.

B

A birthday gift for employees is a voluntary benefit from the employer for the personal occasion that recurs every year: a card with a message, a small gift in kind or a voucher. Swiss practice explicitly names birthday gifts as customary gifts in kind; they remain free of contributions as long as all gifts in kind for one person in the calendar year do not exceed CHF 600.– in total – a sum of money would be salary. Because the occasion affects every person once a year, it is the test of equal treatment: nobody may be forgotten.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

It is a recurring, easily plannable occasion and therefore a touchstone for a fair process. The recipient rule, value, data protection and exceptions are defined in advance.
With Bontique, birthday Checks can be prepared centrally and still individualized with name, design and a personal message. The annual total of gifts per person remains to be monitored.

The Bontique-Check is a personalizable choice voucher from Switzerland that combines hundreds of vouchers in one. The company determines the value, design and message; the recipient chooses within the redemption network what to use the value for and can split it across several partners. Because the Check cannot be redeemed for cash, it counts as a gift in kind for contribution purposes: for customary occasions it remains free of AHV contributions and without an entry in the salary certificate up to CHF 600.– per person and calendar year.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Explains product, roles and process in one term. Companies determine value, design and message; recipients choose redemption and partners.
The Bontique-Check is the central product: the company determines value, design and message, the recipient chooses a fitting offer from the redemption network.

the company gives, the person chooses
Bonus or gift is the fundamental question before every benefit. A bonus pays for performance or the achievement of targets and belongs in the payroll process; a gift honours an occasion or a contribution and remains voluntary. In Switzerland, a bonus – as a salary component or gratuity – is always relevant salary and must be declared in the salary certificate, whereas a customary gift in kind remains free of contributions up to CHF 600.– per person and calendar year. The name changes nothing about the classification; what matters are purpose, form and actual practice.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Helps decide before handing over whether performance is being remunerated or an occasion honoured. That decision affects communication, contract and payroll.
Bontique supports gift and recognition moments. A contractually owed or performance-related bonus must not be reinterpreted for tax or employment-law purposes by calling it a Bontique gift.

Bonuses and rewards are benefits for defined results, contributions or occasions – in money, in kind, as a voucher or in time. They only work with clear criteria and an explicitly stated reason; unexplained surprise bonuses can even lower performance. In Switzerland, performance, loyalty and success bonuses in money are relevant salary; a reward in kind as a one-off award for outstanding achievements, by contrast, falls under the rule for gifts in kind and remains free of contributions up to CHF 600.– per person and calendar year.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Requires clear goals, criteria and possible side effects in advance. Performance-related bonuses are treated differently from spontaneous or occasion-related gifts.
Bontique can represent bonuses in kind and voluntary rewards through fixed Check values and free partner choice. For promised, regular or performance-related bonuses, payroll must be examined.
Pay & bonuses

C

A cash bonus is a payment of money for a performance, a result or a company occasion, in addition to the agreed salary. In Switzerland, like any performance, loyalty or success bonus, it is part of the relevant salary and is fully accounted for via AHV and the salary certificate. Under the Code of Obligations, whether it remains voluntary or is owed is decided by the agreement and previous practice, not by its name.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Shows when a payment remunerates performance and must run through payroll. It must not be renamed a gift in order to circumvent contributions or contractual entitlements.
If Bontique-Checks are promised as a performance-related bonus, they can take on the character of salary. Bontique customers should therefore document the occasion properly and not declare cash bonuses as a gift.
Law & taxes
money for performance or an occasion, always salary
A cash gift is a benefit from the employer that is paid out or transferred as money, even if it is called a gift. In Switzerland, cash never counts as a gift in kind: it is part of the relevant salary, is subject to AHV contributions and must be declared in full in the salary certificate, regardless of the occasion and the amount. The annual limit of CHF 600.– applies only to gifts in kind, which also include vouchers that cannot be redeemed for cash.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Must be kept separate from a gift in kind in Swiss payroll practice. A friendly label does not change the fact that money paid out directly has salary character in principle.
Bontique-Checks are to be distinguished from cash paid out directly. This distinction matters because in Swiss payroll cash is in principle treated differently from an occasional gift in kind.
Law & taxes
money remains salary, even as a gift
The CHF 600.– threshold is the amount up to which customary gifts in kind remain free of contributions in Switzerland: gifts for Christmas, birthdays and similar occasions as well as one-off awards for special achievements are neither part of the relevant salary nor of the salary certificate up to a total value of CHF 600.– per person and calendar year. What counts is the annual total of all gifts in kind for one person at the employer’s cost price, not the individual occasion. If the limit is exceeded, the entire amount must be accounted for and declared under item 2.3 of the salary certificate, not just the excess: a threshold, not an allowance. Gifts of money are salary regardless of the amount; since 2026 the same limit applies to AHV and taxes.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Requires an annual view per person, not just the examination of a single order. HR and payroll must bring together relevant benefits from all internal sources.
Bontique customers need to know the annual total of relevant gifts in kind per person. Uniform Check values and a traceable recipient list make this documentation easier.
Law & taxes
CHF 600.– per year, for gifts in kind only
A choice voucher has a fixed value but leaves the recipient the choice between many redemption options, unlike a single-brand voucher or a pre-selected gift in kind. It solves the fit problem of gift-giving: because the person chooses for themselves, no value is lost to taste or need. For contribution purposes, vouchers in Switzerland are treated like gifts in kind provided they cannot be redeemed for cash, and are therefore free of contributions for customary occasions up to CHF 600.– per person and calendar year.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Links a fixed value to several redemption options. HR keeps a uniform framework without prescribing the recipient’s personal taste.
The Bontique-Check is designed as a choice voucher: the company gives personally, while the recipient chooses from various partner offers.
Gifts & occasions
fixed value, free choice, no cash
Commitment is a person’s attachment to their company, its goals and their role. Research distinguishes affective commitment (wanting to stay), normative commitment (feeling one ought to stay) and continuance commitment (having to stay because a change would cost too much); for retention and engagement, the affective kind matters most. It arises from leadership, fairness, meaning and experienced appreciation, not from satisfaction alone and not from long service.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Makes clear that emotional attachment cannot be equated with satisfaction or long service. HR therefore looks at several signals rather than a single attrition rate.
Recurring, credible Bontique moments can show that contributions are seen and thus support emotional attachment. Commitment, however, arises above all from leadership, fairness and development opportunities.
Retention & motivation
attachment: wanting to stay, not having to
Company culture is the fabric of jointly lived assumptions, rules and behaviours that shapes decisions and collaboration; it is recognizable less by formulated guiding values than by what is rewarded, tolerated and ignored in everyday life. Appreciation is part of this culture when managers reliably name contributions, rules are applied fairly and resources match the words. A gift can make culture visible; it cannot create it.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Places appreciation within everyday behaviour and actual decisions. Communicated values only count once leadership, rules and resources match them.
Bontique offers a reliable channel for selected appreciation moments. Whether a culture grows from it depends on how managers name contributions, how fairly rules are applied and whether everyday behaviour matches the gesture.
Recognition & culture
what is rewarded and ignored in everyday life
Criteria-based recognition follows predefined, understandable characteristics – such as a special contribution, company values put into practice or an anniversary milestone reached – instead of chance or personal liking. Good criteria are observable, applicable to comparable cases and free of discrimination; they limit arbitrariness but do not replace the personal reason in the individual case. Badly set criteria work in the opposite direction: those who are passed over although they meet the conditions withdraw their effort.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Makes visible why someone receives recognition. The criteria must be observable, applicable to comparable cases and free of discrimination.
Bontique can translate value tiers, recipient groups and recurring occasions into a uniform process. Which contributions are recognized is still decided and explained by the company.
Recognition & culture
clear criteria instead of personal liking
A culture of appreciation is an organization’s well-established habit of reliably noticing contributions, treating them fairly and recognizing them concretely, instead of taking them for granted. It arises from many small, reliable gestures in everyday life, from leadership and fair processes, not from campaigns or individual gifts. Leadership, teams and HR carry clearly named, different responsibilities within it.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Shows itself in recurring behaviour and fair processes, not in a campaign. Leadership, teams and HR carry different, clearly named responsibilities.
Bontique links central organization with personal design and supports recurring moments, from welcome to anniversary. This only becomes credible through fair rules and everyday recognition.
Recognition & culture
the habit of seeing contributions

D

E

Effort-reward imbalance (after Johannes Siegrist) is a lasting imbalance between high effort and too little reward in pay, recognition, security and development. Studies link this pattern to increased risks of depression and coronary heart disease. It is the flip side of appreciation: where effort goes unseen over time, not only motivation suffers but health.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Warns against viewing recognition in isolation. If pay, security or development are lastingly wrong, a gift cannot remedy the imbalance.
A Bontique gift can make missing recognition visible at a specific moment, but it cannot offset a lasting imbalance of effort, pay, security and development. Here Bontique should be part of a broader improvement.
Retention & motivation
too much effort for too little reward
Employee engagement is the extent to which employees commit themselves to their work and their company with energy, dedication and focus. It arises from meaning, leadership, development, fairness and experienced support and is neither satisfaction nor extra work: engaged people voluntarily do more, but engagement must not be presumed as a permanent unpaid extra. Recognition honours engagement without demanding it.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Describes voluntary energy and attachment, not unlimited extra work. Recognition honours engagement, but must not presuppose it as a permanent additional service.
Bontique can recognize engagement by naming a concrete voluntary contribution and honouring it with a Check. Engagement must not, however, be demanded as unpaid additional work.
Retention & motivation
energy and dedication, given voluntarily
Employee experience is the sum of all the experiences a person has with their employer, from the first contact in the application via everyday work to leaving and beyond. It arises from processes, leadership, the working environment and culture, and is remembered not by the average but by peaks and endings (peak-end rule). Individual moments of appreciation therefore work when they sit at the formative points and everyday life matches.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Helps judge individual appreciation moments as part of the overall employer experience. A fine Check cannot offset a poor process, but can make a good transition visible.
Bontique shapes selected appreciation moments along the employee journey, from welcome through milestones to farewell.
Experience & wellbeing
all the experiences with the employer
An employee gift is a voluntary benefit from the employer, not owed under contract, for an occasion or in recognition of a contribution – from a bouquet of flowers via a voucher to an anniversary gift. It is precisely this voluntariness that distinguishes it from salary and makes it psychologically effective: a gift in kind has a stronger effect than the same amount in cash. For contribution purposes, in Switzerland the form counts; gifts in kind and vouchers that cannot be redeemed for cash remain free of contributions for customary occasions up to CHF 600.– per person and calendar year – money is salary.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Links an occasion to a voluntary benefit. HR clarifies value, recipients, message, handover and Swiss treatment before the order is triggered.
The Bontique-Check combines a uniformly administrable gift value with personal design and free choice within the redemption network.
Gifts & occasions
a voluntary benefit, which is why it works
The employee journey is a person’s path through the company, structured into stations: application, joining, onboarding, development, milestones, life events, leaving or retirement. As a planning grid it shows at which stations recognition is expected, where occasions are missing, are handled twice or have no owner. The employee experience describes how this path feels; the journey describes where it leads.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Serves as a planning grid from joining to leaving. HR can thereby see at which stations occasions are missing, handled twice or lack clear ownership.
Bontique can be used at defined stations of the employee journey, for example at onboarding, birthday, anniversary, a development step or departure. Gift processes thereby become plannable without becoming impersonal.
Experience & wellbeing
the path through the company, station by station
Employee retention comprises all the factors and measures that move employees to stay with the company and feel they belong: fair work, development, leadership, belonging and perceived support. Research distinguishes wanting to stay from having to stay; only the former protects sustainably against resignations, and its strongest known driver is experienced appreciation. Retention forms early and erodes where reliable work remains invisible; a single gift does not create it.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Is not derived from a single gift. HR combines appreciation with leadership, development, fairness and working conditions, and measures attachment through several signals.
Bontique can support reliable appreciation moments. The Check is a visible sign, but no substitute for leadership, development or fair working conditions.
Retention & motivation
what makes people stay
Employee wellbeing comprises the physical, mental and social aspects of the work experience: energy, security, belonging, meaning. It arises less from individual offers than from workload, leadership, scope for autonomy and experienced support; benefits can support it, but they do not compensate for structural strain. Effort that is seen is also part of it: a lasting mismatch between effort and recognition makes people measurably ill.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Encompasses physical, mental and social aspects and must not be reduced to benefits. Optional offerings can support, but cannot offset structural burdens.
A Bontique-Check opens up, through fitting partners, an individual choice between rest, activity, food or shared time. Wellbeing nonetheless depends substantially on workload, security, leadership and social support.
Experience & wellbeing
more work design than benefits

F

Financial recognition honours a contribution with money or a monetary benefit: as a bonus, premium, salary increase, gift in kind or voucher. In Switzerland, the form decides on the contributions. Money is always relevant salary; items in kind and vouchers that cannot be redeemed for cash count as gifts in kind and remain free of contributions for customary occasions up to CHF 600.– per person and calendar year. So that the message does not get lost in the amount, every financial recognition needs a concrete reason.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Makes the monetary value of recognition visible and demands a clear delimitation from remuneration that is owed. The amount needs an objective framework and a comprehensible justification.
The fixed value of a Bontique-Check makes material recognition visible, while the recipient chooses for themselves. Where there is a performance link or regularity, the company must examine possible salary character.
Pay & bonuses
money or monetary value: the form decides
Fringe benefits are advantages that employees receive in addition to their cash salary: company car, meals, discounts, insurance contributions, subscriptions. The umbrella term says nothing about contributions. In Switzerland, each benefit is assessed individually as to whether, and at what value, it is subject to AHV and must be declared in the salary certificate; the salary certificate lists them under item 2, for some fixed rates or thresholds apply, for others the market value.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Groups benefits outside base salary, but says nothing yet about their tax treatment. Each benefit is classified individually under Swiss rules.
Bontique can be used as a voluntary gift or benefit component alongside salary. Whether a Check counts as a fringe benefit, a gift in kind or salary depends on the occasion and the design.
Law & taxes
benefits alongside salary, assessed one by one

G

A gift in kind is a benefit from the employer in material form: an object, an experience or a voucher that cannot be redeemed for cash. In Swiss contribution law, the term is decisive. Customary gifts in kind for special occasions or as a one-off award are not part of the relevant salary and not part of the salary certificate up to a total value of CHF 600.– per person and calendar year, valued at the employer’s cost price. Vouchers are treated like gifts in kind, as are gold, silver and WIR money; cash always counts as salary.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

For AHV and the salary certificate this is a concrete category with conditions. What counts is the form, occasion, annual total and payability, not the product name.
Classification as a gift in kind is central for Bontique-Checks in Swiss payroll accounting and for the annual total per person. What matters is the concrete arrangement, not the product name alone.
Law & taxes
item in kind or voucher, exempt up to CHF 600.–
A gratuity is a special payment that the employer makes in addition to the salary on certain occasions, for example at Christmas or at the end of the financial year, and whose amount is at the employer’s discretion (Art. 322d CO). It is owed if it was agreed and can become an entitlement through repeated payment without reservation; a clear reservation of voluntariness keeps it voluntary. For contribution purposes, a gratuity in money is always relevant salary; what distinguishes it from an occasional gift in kind is regularity, predictability and its remuneration character.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

In employment law it is to be distinguished from an occasional gift. Repetition, reservation, agreement and predictability affect whether an entitlement can arise.
Depending on the rules and practice, a Bontique-Check may be classified legally as a gratuity or as a gift. Repetition, reservation, occasion and predictability must therefore be examined before handing it over.
Law & taxes

H

Health and wellbeing programmes bundle voluntary offers for physical, mental and social health: exercise, nutrition, counselling, rest, mindfulness. They complement good working conditions but replace neither the statutory health protection under the Employment Act nor the responsibility for a realistic workload. In Switzerland: participation is voluntary, health data are specially protected, and if the employer covers costs, for example for a gym membership, the benefit must be assessed as a fringe benefit.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Separates voluntary offerings from statutory health protection and good work design. HR examines freedom of participation, data protection, accessibility and actual need.
Depending on the current redemption network, Bontique-Checks can open up choices for employees in sport, wellness, rest or short breaks. They complement a programme, but replace neither prevention nor healthy working conditions.
Experience & wellbeing
voluntary, no substitute for good work
Hybrid appreciation is recognition that reaches people in the office, in the home office, on the move and on shift work alike. It is based on contribution and occasion rather than physical visibility and chooses channel and timing so that neither office presence nor constant digital availability is rewarded. The yardstick is simple: the same performance receives the same acknowledgement, no matter where it was delivered.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Checks whether recognition reaches employees regardless of workplace, shift or visibility. Channel and timing are chosen so that neither office presence nor constant digital availability is rewarded.
Bontique-Checks can be handed over digitally or in print and create a common framework for distributed recipient groups. The personal justification and an accessible handover moment remain the company’s task.
Recognition & culture
reaches office, home office and shifts alike

I

Individual appreciation focuses on the specific person: what they have achieved, which moment they are experiencing and in which form recognition feels right for them – public or quiet, material or in time. It does not mean making different rules for each person, but becoming personal within fair rules: value and entitlement stay the same; message, handover and choice adapt.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Links personal relevance to fair rules. HR keeps value and entitlement comprehensible, while message, handover or choice may suit the person and situation.
With the Bontique-Check the company can set a uniform value and framework, while the recipient chooses what suits them. The gesture becomes personal through the concrete message, not through the choice alone.
Recognition & culture
personal in form, equal in the rule

L

The link to the occasion is the connection between a benefit and a specific occasion: birthday, wedding, birth, anniversary, passed exam or a special effort. For Swiss contribution practice it is a prerequisite, not a formality: gifts in kind that are customarily given for special events or as a one-off award remain free of contributions up to CHF 600.– per person and calendar year. Regular benefits without an occasion have salary character, and even with an occasion, form, value and annual total also matter.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Requires a documented occasion rather than an arbitrary benefit. In the Swiss classification the occasion is relevant, but never decides salary or exemption on its own.
For a Bontique-Check the concrete occasion should be documented, for example a birthday, wedding or anniversary. This eases the Swiss classification, but on its own establishes no exemption from contributions.
Gifts & occasions
no occasion, no exemption from contributions
A long-service gift is a benefit from the employer for a defined length of service, for example after 5, 10, 20 or 25 years: as a sum of money, a gift in kind, a voucher or additional holiday days. In Switzerland, paid in money it is relevant salary and must be declared in the salary certificate as an irregular benefit; as a gift in kind it counts towards the annual limit of CHF 600.– per person, and additional holiday days do not have to be declared. Fixed anniversary tiers that are the same for everyone make the rule fair and transparent.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Requires transparent anniversary tiers and a documented rule. Value, additional time off and gift form should be comprehensible across comparable cases.
Bontique allows uniform Check values by length of service and at the same time personal messages for the individual. Rules, value tiers and Swiss contribution consequences should be set in advance.
Law & taxes
honouring loyalty: money is salary, a gift in kind is not

M

Milestones in the employment relationship are the significant stations of a career: joining, completed probation, completed apprenticeship, further training, promotion, anniversary, return after a break, retirement. They lend themselves to recognition because they provide a recognizable reason; an established process prevents such moments from being handled randomly or unequally. For passed professional examinations, the AHV has its own rule: benefits for completing an apprenticeship or for examinations of further professional training are free of contributions up to CHF 600.– per examination, in money or in kind.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Extends occasion planning beyond birthday and anniversary, for example to probation, further training, a promotion or a project close. Every milestone needs a recognizable reason and a fitting form.
Bontique makes milestones such as passing probation, completing further training, a promotion or retirement visible with a fitting Check. Occasion and personal effect are captured in the message.
Gifts & occasions
the formative stations of a career

N

Non-financial recognition does without monetary value: a concrete thank you, visibility in the team, trust in the form of responsibility, learning opportunities, time. It is neither automatically free nor the small version of recognition; a sincerely reasoned thank you is among the most effective forms of all, because it speaks to the feeling of being needed. Material gifts complement this message; they do not replace it.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Shows that thanks, time, visibility and trust are recognition forms in their own right. A material gift can complement them, but not replace them.
Bontique works most credibly together with non-financial recognition, for example a concrete thank you, visible acknowledgement or additional time. The Check complements this message rather than replacing it.
Recognition & culture
thanks, visibility, trust, time

O

Onboarding is the professional, social and organizational integration of new employees, from signing the contract via the first day to arriving securely in the role and the team, often until the end of probation or the hundredth day. The start shapes attachment early and, following the peak-end rule, stays in memory for a long time. A welcome gift is one moment within it, not the process: workplace, contact person and orientation must be in place before the gesture works.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Links professional, social and organizational integration. A welcome gift is only one moment within a process meant to create orientation and belonging.
A welcome Bontique-Check can personally mark the first working day or the end of probation. The message and the choice of partner convey belonging, while the actual onboarding process ensures professional and social integration.
Experience & wellbeing
arriving professionally, socially and organizationally

P

Payment in kind is the part of remuneration that is provided not in money but in benefits in kind, above all board and lodging. It is a regular consideration for work and therefore relevant salary: the AHV values it at fixed rates, CHF 33.– per day for full board and lodging, and in the salary certificate it appears under item 2.1. What separates it from a gift in kind is precisely this regularity and its remuneration character; an occasion gift in material form is not salary.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Prevents confusing a regular benefit in kind provided in return for work with an occasional gift. Payment in kind is part of remuneration and is valued accordingly.
A Bontique-Check granted regularly in return for work could constitute payment in kind or another form of salary. The term is therefore important for separating recurring remuneration from occasional gifts.
Law & taxes

Perceived organizational support is employees’ sense that their company values their contributions and cares about their wellbeing. In research it is the strongest known driver of retention and engagement and the theoretical core behind the effect of appreciation; a meta-analysis of 558 studies documents the link. It arises from the company’s overall behaviour, from fairness, leadership and support in everyday life, not from a single gesture.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

It is a research term for the experience that contributions count and the company cares about wellbeing. It is better suited than individual reactions to a gift for viewing appreciation in a wider context.
A suitably justified Bontique-Check can signal that a contribution is seen and that a person’s wellbeing counts. The perception arises, however, from the company’s overall behaviour, not from the gift alone.
Retention & motivation
the sense that contributions count

Q

Quiet quitting describes the decision to limit oneself to the work owed under the contract and to forgo lasting extra effort. The term is not a professional diagnosis: someone who does the agreed work well is not disengaged. As a signal it should nevertheless be taken seriously, because the withdrawal of effort often arises where reliable work remains invisible; an occasion for a conversation about workload, leadership, fairness and recognition, not a reason for sanctions.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Should be used as a conversation starter, not a diagnosis. Someone who delivers the contractually agreed work is not automatically disengaged; HR examines workload, leadership, fairness, development and recognition together.
A Bontique-Check can visibly honour a concrete contribution. It is not, however, an answer to chronic overload, unfair pay or missing development; those causes must be clarified first.
Retention & motivation
only what was agreed: a signal, not a diagnosis

R

Recognition among employees is the mutual acknowledgement of contributions within the team, without going through management. It makes visible what managers miss in everyday work and therefore needs clear rules: a concrete reason, fair criteria and an approval step, so that no popularity contest arises and nobody is systematically overlooked.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Requires clear nominations, fair criteria and protection against popularity contests. The team can see contributions that escape management in everyday work.
A Bontique-Check can materially complement recognition justified by colleagues. Nomination, fair criteria and approval stay within the company’s process.
Recognition & culture
mutual acknowledgement within the team
Recognition by managers is the acknowledgement of a specific contribution by the person’s direct manager. It works when it comes promptly, names the contribution and places its significance for the team or the company – not only at the annual review. Because managers are closest to the work, their recognition is the form employees experience most directly.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Helps define who names contributions promptly and how general praise becomes comprehensible recognition. A gift should follow only once the manager can explain what exactly is being recognized.
Managers can tie a Bontique-Check to a concretely named contribution and hand it over with a personal message. The gift thus complements direct recognition without replacing it.
Recognition & culture
acknowledgement of a contribution by one’s manager
Recognition of employees is the visible response to a specific contribution, behaviour or result: a thank you, an acknowledgement in front of the team, a gift with a stated reason. It is the specific expression of appreciation. Appreciation is the attitude towards the person; recognition is the individual act that refers to what was achieved.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Clarifies the difference between concrete recognition and general appreciation. For HR the decisive thing is to link occasion, justification, form and recipient comprehensibly.
A Bontique-Check can make concrete recognition visible and memorable. It is the company’s personal justification that gives the gift its meaning.
Recognition & culture
the visible response to a contribution
Redemption is the moment when a voucher value turns into a concrete offer: the recipient chooses within the redemption network and uses the value in full or in part. With the Bontique-Check this happens at bontique.ch/check; the Check is valid for 24 months. For the effect, what counts is that this step is simple and free of hurdles; clarity, accessibility and support also decide whether a gift really lands.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Describes the step in which a Check becomes a concrete offer. For HR, clarity, accessibility, validity and support matter more than the handover alone.
At redemption the recipient decides what to use the Bontique-Check for. This moment of choice sets the Check apart from a pre-selected material gift.
Gifts & occasions
when value turns into an offer
The redemption network is the totality of partners and offers where a choice voucher can be redeemed. Its quality is measured not by the mere number of partners but by its relevance for the recipients: categories such as food, sport, wellness, leisure or time out, availability in Switzerland and the possibility of spreading the value across several partners. The better the selection fits, the smaller the loss of value that gifts not chosen by the recipients themselves entail.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Determines how large the actual choice is for recipients. What matters is not only the number of partners, but the categories, Swiss availability and the option to split the value.
Bontique’s redemption network links one Check to a variety of partner offers. Its breadth makes it possible, for example, to choose between food, sport, wellness, leisure or time out.
Gifts & occasions
all the partners where redemption takes place
Regular recognition takes place continuously and close to the observed contribution, instead of being confined to the annual review, Christmas and anniversaries. Regular means reliable, not mechanical: small routines in the team, a thank you after the completed project, a word after the night shift. It is the foundation of a culture of appreciation; grand gestures on a few calendar days do not make up for a year of silence.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Prevents appreciation happening on only a few calendar days. Leadership and teams create simple routines without turning recognition into an obligatory exercise or a permanent handing out of bonuses.
With Bontique, planned occasions and selected spontaneous gestures can be organized centrally. Not every act of recognition needs a Check; often a concrete thank you, time or visibility is the more fitting form.
Recognition & culture
reliable and close to the contribution
Remuneration is the consideration owed by the employer for work performed: in Switzerland, the salary under Art. 322 CO with fixed and variable cash components as well as assessable benefits in kind (payment in kind). It is subject to employment, tax and social insurance law, i.e. AHV contributions, the salary certificate and, where applicable, withholding tax. Voluntary, occasional gifts must be distinguished from remuneration; the question of whether a benefit is salary, bonus, gratuity, benefit or gift therefore belongs before every handover, because it determines contract, communication and accounting.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Separates the consideration owed for work from voluntary recognition. HR first clarifies whether an amount is salary, bonus, gratuity, benefit or gift, before choosing form and message.
Before using a Bontique-Check the company clarifies whether it is providing a voluntary gift or an owed benefit. Bontique eases selection and handover, but does not relieve HR and payroll of the employment, tax and social insurance classification.

The salary certificate is the statement with which Swiss employers report to each employee every year all salary components and fringe benefits for the tax return. What has to be entered is governed by the guidelines of the Federal Tax Administration: gifts of money, bonuses and gratuities belong in it; customary gifts in kind up to CHF 600.– per person and calendar year do not, above that the entire amount under item 2.3. For this, HR and payroll need the annual total of all gifts per person, not just the individual order.

Links gift planning to correct Swiss declaration. HR documents type, value and annual total so that payroll can check the entry.
Depending on type, value and annual total, Bontique-Checks and other employee gifts must be documented correctly and, where applicable, declared in the Swiss salary certificate. The term helps HR and payroll classify the issue correctly.

Spontaneous recognition honours a specific contribution promptly, without waiting for a fixed occasion or the next appraisal: as a spot award, a small gift or a thank you in front of the team. Its strength lies in the closeness to the event, its credibility in clearly naming what the person achieved. In Switzerland, a material gift as a one-off award for special achievements or efforts counts as a gift in kind and thus towards the annual limit of CHF 600.– per person; as a cash bonus it would be salary.

Enables prompt recognition outside fixed calendar dates. Fair value tiers and a brief justification prevent arbitrariness.
A Bontique-Check makes it possible to honour an unexpected contribution promptly, as long as the manager explains concretely what was valuable about it. Such spot awards need fair value tiers and a simple approval.

Theory X by Douglas McGregor (1960) describes a view of people in leadership: people supposedly avoid work by nature and have to be controlled and moved by external incentives or pressure. It is not a personality test but a model of the assumptions that managers, often unconsciously, build their systems on. Recognition programmes whose main aim is to buy and control behaviour follow Theory X; they produce compliance, not attachment.

Entscheidend im HR-Alltag

Makes visible the view of human nature behind recognition programmes. A system meant chiefly to control and buy behaviour needs a different correction from a missing gift process.
A Bontique-Check should not be used as leverage for desired behaviour. Recognition is more credible when it honours a concrete contribution instead of papering over missing trust with a reward.

view of people as “avoiding work”: control
Theory Y by Douglas McGregor (1960) assumes that people take on responsibility, direct themselves and find meaning in their work when conditions allow. It too is a leadership model, not a statement about every person in every situation. Recognition in the sense of Theory Y honours contributions and trusts people with their own decisions – free choice instead of control; but it replaces neither participation nor scope for autonomy in everyday work.

Directs attention to trust, self-direction and meaningful work. Recognition honours contributions without reducing employees to recipients of incentives.
The Bontique-Check’s freedom of choice fits an approach that trusts employees to decide for themselves. It replaces neither participation nor room for manoeuvre in everyday work.

Total rewards is the overall offering that employees receive for their work and belonging: base salary and variable pay, additional benefits, development, working conditions and recognition. The framework makes visible what purpose each element serves. In our experience, recognition is the part of it that costs the least and binds the most. Gifts belong in it as an instrument for occasions and moments, not as a substitute for fair pay, development or leadership.

Places recognition, benefits and gifts alongside pay, development and work design. This makes visible what purpose a Bontique benefit serves and which tasks it does not take on.
Within total rewards, Bontique sits as an instrument for occasion-related gifts and selected recognition moments. The Bontique-Check is neither base pay nor a substitute for development, leadership or good working conditions.

A work anniversary is the anniversary of joining after a round number of years, usually 5, 10, 20 or 25, and one of the most emotional occasions in an employment relationship. What is honoured is not the number alone but the shared story and the person’s concrete contribution. What is given for the anniversary is, in Switzerland, depending on its form, a long-service gift with salary character, a gratuity or a gift in kind within the annual limit; the form decides on contributions and declaration, not the occasion.

Links the length of the collaboration to a personal look back at concrete contributions. HR plans date, value, participants and message early.
Bontique helps organize anniversary gifts centrally and make them personal through an individual message, own design and free choice.

Workplace health management (WHM) is the systematic design of work, leadership and organization with the aim of maintaining employees’ health and ability to work. It comprises prevention, health-friendly working conditions and voluntary offers such as exercise or counselling. In Switzerland, WHM complements the statutory health protection under the Employment Act but does not replace it; participation in offers is voluntary, and health data are sensitive personal data under the Data Protection Act.

Places voluntary offerings within a broader health approach. Sport or wellness can complement, but workload, leadership, prevention and work design remain the central tasks.
Bontique can complement voluntary WHM offers: depending on the current partner network, employees can use a Check for sport, health, wellness or a short break. The Check does not replace health-friendly work design.
